I really wonder what it would take to completely characterize the sound from those guitar amps and recreate it using DSP and low-distortion parts... I'm sure it's been done somewhere, or at least tried.
I'm not sure how completely the physics of these classic amps' circuitries are being modelled, but definitely that's what these amps are trying to do, and doing a pretty decent job of it, too.
But we could probably do it cheaper.
