No. Toad and the Super Mario Mushroom are distantly related species which diverged from a common ancestor in the early Atarian period. Toad lacks a functional gene, 1UP, that encodes the enzymatic product responsible for catalyzing the Super Mario reaction. Transgenic experiments that introduced a function copy of 1UP into Toad demonstrated that it is actually synthetically lethal with a second, yet-to-be identified gene. Further research is significanly hampered by the shortage of Toad embryos. Work is currently in progress to create transgenic Princesses that will produce Toad embryos.
